What is Gift Aid?

If you pay tax, Gift Aid is a scheme by which you can give a sum of money to charity and the charity can reclaim the basic rate of tax on your gift from the Inland Revenue. That increases the value of the gift you make to the charity. For example, if you give £10 using Gift Aid in the tax year 2002/03, that gift is worth £12.82 to the charity.

You can make payments by cash, cheque, postal order, direct debit, standing order, debit or credit card or even in a foreign currency. Subject to a few rules, you can give any amount, large or small, regular or one-off, and The Ashley Foundation can reclaim the tax. If you are a higher rate taxpayer, you can claim relief on the difference between the basic rate and higher rate of tax. If you do not pay tax, you should not use Gift Aid.

How does my gift qualify for Gift Aid?
You must : GIFT AID NOTES
  1. You can cancel your gift declaration at any time by notifying the charity.
  2. Please notify the charity if your circumstances change and you no longer pay any amount of tax, or if you change your name or address.
  3. To be eligible to Gift Aid you must pay an amount of income tax and/or capital gains tax (including tax you may pay on your savings) at least equal to the tax that the charity reclaims on your donations in the tax year (currently 28p for each £1 you give). Unless you're giving thousands of pounds that's very unlikely!
  4. Remember to notify us if you no longer pay an amount of income tax or capital gains tax equal to the tax we reclaim on your donations.
  5. If you pay at the higher rate you can claim further tax relief in your self assessment tax return.
  6. If you are unsure whether your donations qualify for Gift Aid tax relief please contact the Inland Revenue on 0870 011 3335 or email improbablyaspammer@theashleyfoundation.org.uk or ask your local tax office for leaflet IR65 Gift Aid. Leave a gift to The Ashley Foundation in your Will

Including a gift to The Ashley Foundation in your will is perhaps the most special, personal way that you can make your concern for homeless people live on for many years to come. Your gift to The Ashley Foundation doesn't have to be big to make a difference to the lives of homeless people.

It is easy to include a gift to The Ashley Foundation in your will. If you feel you would like to proceed, we suggest that in the first instance you contact your solicitor who is best placed to give impartial guidance and will advise you on how to make a legacy to The Ashley Foundation. There is no specific wording that we require - however, you should include our charity number: 1063208.

If you feel you would like to talk your decision through further or you have any questions at this stage about supporting The Ashley Foundations’ work with a legacy, please do not hesitate to contact Laura Cooper on (01253) 297200 or improbablyaspammer@theashleyfoundation.org.uk

The Ashley Foundation has also produced an information pack which gives advice on setting up a will. Please download a copy (see below).
