Trustees
Thousands of individuals across the UK serve as trustees of charities. The Charity Commission estimates that there are over a million charity trustees in England and Wales alone.
Charity trusteeship is valuable, exciting and rewarding. Yet it carries responsibilities.
Charity trustees are the people who have the general control and management of a charity's administration: in short, those who are ultimately responsible for the charity. They may also be known as the board, the management committee, or the directors.
We have four trustees who work very hard for the staff and residents here at The Ashley Foundation.
There are seven basic duties of a charity trusteeship. They are:
- Trustees are responsible for the proper administration of the charity.
- Trustees must accept ultimate responsibility for everything the charity does.
- Trustees have to act reasonably and prudently in all matters relating to their charity.
- Trustees must safeguard and protect the assets of the charity.
- Trustees have a duty to act collectively.
- Trustees must act in the best interests of their charity.
- Trustees must avoid any conflict between their personal interests and those of the charity.
